Lazy day today. Kicking back in the living room, a nice fire keeping the house warm and two sleeping kitties keeping me company. Hubby raised the harmonium so the angle of arms won't put my fingers to sleep. I really like it. The weaving bench he made a couple of months ago is a perfect organ bench with a couple of pillows added. Granted a harmonium is not a full size organ, yet, the set-up is comfy and kinda like the old days LOL

Finally got the phone app to work on the IdeaPad Flex. My Gods, typing messages to people is so much easier and less painful. Interesting that I'm taking this quarantine time to 1) acknowledge the pain in my hands and 2) do something about it. The nerve tests are postponed till the clinic can get back to 'normal.' So, the wrist braces I purchased are terrific for sleeping with and for just keeping the right hand steady. I didn't realize that I clench my fists when I sleep. Hey, I grind my teeth and have to wear teeth guards so wearing wrist braces makes a heck of a lot of sense. At any rate my hands do not ache so darn much in the morning and this is good. I still have periodic pools of pain in the palm of my right hand but the pain is doable for now.

Chilly, what is it with the bone-biting chill lately? This chill is more like the San Francisco Peninsula chill. Yeah, that one, where you have the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Bay on the other and the chill, let alone the fog, goes right into your bones.

Thank heavens for the few days of rain. Pollen count plummeted. A couple of friends in town had already gone in for the seasonal allergy shot and were actually contemplating a SECOND shot when the rains came. They are incredibly happy.

Been comparing herbal concoctions with friends. I have two, slightly different, blends of Fire Cider macerating happily in the garage. Tried a couple of different recipes for Thieves Oil to make a nice anti-viral spray and am pleased with one and not thrilled with the other. Listened to a nice chat with Rosalee de le Foret and John Gallagher yesterday about which herbs are good for which situations. They really wanted to address the incredible amount of mis-information that is out there on the web and try to clear up any really, really bad info. Matthew Woods, Jim McDonald, Kami McBride, Dr. Tieraona Low Dog and Dr. Christopher Hobbs are really putting out great information with scientific backup.

Ah I think I've found the idea situation for typing on the Flex tablet cuz I've been typing like a maniac on speed. WOW Maybe I will go check out that NaNoWriMo for quarantine.

My harper friends up in Monroe; Aryeh Frankfurter and Lisa Lynne Franco set out a FB update that all is well up at the homestead. They've had to cancel 34 performances AND a tour!. Wow. The good thing, according to Lisa, is that they are recording a new CD in the home studio. Yippee!!!

Just about time to listen to Krishna Das in a live kirtan concert. Really want to pay attention to how he plays harmonium. Tomorrow is a live kirtan with Jai Uttal. Looks like he's been playing more guitar lately but will check out his harmonium style too.

Husband shared a funny cat story this am. He was about early and peaked through the curtains to the patio. WHAM! 4 paws and a large grey Tuxedo hit the screen at chest height, he's 5'11" and loud MEEOOOW emited from the aged Uncle Snowball's mouth. Hubby held up a finder, closed the curtain, walked back to me and mentioned, "the cats are watching Simon's Cat through the window. By the way, the horde is hungry."Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-17082299793572752362020-03-24T13:29:00.001-07:002020-03-24T13:30:00.195-07:00

Greetings from Mama Kanta's Menagerie!

It's day Whatever of self-isolation/physical distancing and thing are pretty normal up here. Well, except for a few new feline faces. With all the turmoil regarding COVID-19 and people absolutely refusing to accept that THEY MAY CARRY THE VIRUS and treating this healing time as vacation/let's party/screw the world time....people are dumping pets. Yes, folks are so intent on their personal self pleasure that they figure pets are no longer necessary and taking them out of town and dumping them in the woods. Hey, the people don't care the pet companion loves them and has needs; the persons needs are paramount.

The Lt. Gov. of Texas suggests getting the economy back to it's 2018numbers. Money is more important than your grandparents living or the child next door living or the health-compromised gas station attendant living OR the health providers living. Dollars over lives; the great platform of the politically conservative. Evidently also the platform of the pro-life politically 'religious.' /end rant

Back to the menagerie. New feline faces have appeared in the back yard. They look somewhat fearful yet are not attacked by any of the local feral/semi-feral/pick me up, I'm purring here! gang. As it is also feline fornication season this is not necessarily a good thing. I'm going broke with all the cats that appear to the food dish. So I've cut down the amounts of food for the horde. Hopefully some other nice person will step up to the cat dish.

BIRDS! Holy cow! The hummingbirds are many and ferociously frolicking in the air. Dive bombing the cats and fighting beak to beak for the pleasure of the lady birds. The local over-wintering Anna's hummingbirds are all here with their colorful iridescence and, yesterday, a brilliant Rufus Male dropped in to stake claim to one of the feeders.

Stellar and Scrub jays are lining the branches of the Rose of Sharon tree (tree, not bush...a little over grown) waiting turns for peanuts. Chickadees are chugging down black sunflower seeds along with birds I don't recognise. FAT Robins are hopping all over the front lawn, so excited the rain has brought food closer to the surface.

Woot! A Rufus just chased a Stellar Jay away from HIS part of the rhodie!

How do cats and birds get along? Quarterly lectures from Mama Kanta to the cats; Kills the healthy birds and forget the nice dry food and dry beds during the winter. Kill any baby birds and it's cat trap for you, kitto. Has worked for three plus years. A very, very, very few sick birds have appeared on the out skirts of the patios. None have been munched. The birds, for their part, are extremely brave and smart about the presence of cats and have no problem dive bombing and/or chasing them away from favorite plants.

Enough for now. Must get to cleaning out closet.

Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-70736186450475557942020-03-20T12:27:00.001-07:002020-03-20T12:27:29.643-07:00WOW, it's been a few years since I've updated. Forgot this was here, actually. Now that we are all home-bound for a while it might be a good time to update.

Sooooo, finally decided to have my hands checked for something other than arthritis and, yep, Corona19 made me postpone the nerve studies. Still, decided to practice a little on the harmonium and yeah, the hands hurt after about 10 minutes. Put a wrist brace on the right hand, the one that is more painful, and that helped during the next practice session. Ordered a brace for the left hand. With both hands braced that should help some. Next is to work on the height of the keyboard as the elbows start to ache and then the digits want to sleep.

I was curious as to why, maybe, it's taken this long for a doctor to say Hmmm, you may have carpal tunnel. Started to think about what I've done with my hands.

Started playing keyboards 63 years ago when I was 7. Never learned piano. Dad disliked piano so he bought a Baldwin Spinet. Baldwin to Conn, Lowery, Hammond C3, CV, A100, B3. Throw in a couple of guitars, Sony & Martin for my folk singing days. Oh yeah, the CapriTaurus Dulcimer from Boulder Creek, too. Sailed for 6 years; hoisting anchors, sails, steering with tiller.

Ah, typewriters; Remington manual, small green, portable manual to take on bus to school. IBM Selectric. One of my jobs was as a teletype operator; slow normal teletype and the speedy, at the time, TWX.

Came back from some offshore and coastal adventures to fall into the world of PCs with 8 inch diskettes, dedicated word processors and freaking heavy Winchester drives. Wang dedicated accounting systems. Oh, those early days. Never got into the Apple world. MS-DOS, DR-DOS for me. Had a Commodore 64. Then worked with PCs, servers, UNIX, PCs, servers, LINUX, oooooo, web sites totally in text!

Took up Celtic Harp for a few years. Nylon string.

Introduced to online gaming in Germany. WOW a whole new world. All day testing programs and all night gaming. Hands, what hands? Ice packs work lol

So 38 years on computer keyboards later, 4 surgeries for trigger finger, 2 each hand and, oh, a few steroid shots for trigger fingers the old hands stopped twitching and started screaming. Did I listen? Heck no. Took up weaving and needle felting. Tried knitting. Can only attempt some interesting looking knitting while wearing crafting gloves.

Crafting gloves! The compression gifts for hands! Yes, I can do almost anything wearing crafting gloves. Have 4 pairs.

Then the hands started to go numb. Shake it out, baby only works so often. Worked with Chiropractor and Acupuncture for a few years. Yes, they work and work well. After a few years, however the stoppage of pain went from weeks, to days to, finally, hours. I still remained stubborn, Arthritis, I told myself. Normal aging process.

Then the pain would just start stabbing my right hand for no reason. Couldn't hold my hand at an angle without it going to sleep. Started dropping things randomly. Have a variety of manual can openers I trade off depending on ability to use. Opening jars can be interesting and I often simply hand the jar off to my husband.

When the left hand started the random stabbing pains and numbness I finally threw in the towel and went to the doctor. Cut down the gaming, off and on line, hehehe. Don't write so much. Still want to play the harmonium. Get back to basic keyboard. Miss my music.

Will be nice to get the nerves tested. Hopefully some physical therapy will be the solution. HOWEVER, after typing this little narration I realize I've really battered the heck out of my hands! I've not included the normal, everyday hand use like cooking, gardening, anything really.

Have an appointment next month for nerve tests. Hopefully we will be out of home isolation by that time.

Weaving and needle felting are still doable. YAY!!!

Nearly the end of March 2017. It's been over two years since I've looked at this blog. Sheesh, a lot has changed. I'll be trying to figure out how to really used this thing for my own use and maybe others. We will see.

We've moved out of the city up the river to a quiet hamlet. A nice place with lots of trees and plants. It is a joy to figure out what we have spring wise as we moved in late summer. I know we have lots of lillies lol. The main reason I've re-started the blog is to find out what's in the garden, log the plants and then find out what to do with them.

Looks like we have a Goat Willow (Salix caprea) at the road end of Hummingbird Island. The other end is home to a Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) and it's pretty huge. In between are Rhodies, Clematis and something else. Under the willow tree are Lemon Balm and that orange flowering thing (get name) that is great for hummingbirds.

Some of the plants I purchased from Heiko survived the snow, Yippee! My little Meyer Lemon survived the winter in a green house. Some herbs survived and maybe one or two of the pelargoniums. It will take a few sniffs to find out which survived.

I purchased an Alembic to experiment with hydrosols. We have enough Melissa officinalis already to make, hopefully, a pint of hydrosol. I just need to clean and prep the alembic first.
I'm at the tail end of the two week crud that likes to scare one into thinking they have either some new flu or pneumonia. Many thanks to my DC and my Acupuncture people for giving me back my lungs. Thanks too, to the MD who gave me an over-the-counter expectorant that worked better than the herbal one. Go figure LOL

Simon is still with us!! I guess he decided that being inside and warm, eating real food and having company was okay. We just take each day as it dawns.

Wildlife is filling the back yard, yippee. Having a garden consult this week so we can learn how to work with the huge evergreens and still manage to grow food.

Ordered a Coolaroo sun shade and am curious how it will work out for the blinding afternoon sun problem.

Curiously energized after seeing my first Bald Eagle of the year a few days ago.

Oooooo getting ready for NaNoWriMo! I am a seat of the pants writer so, in this case, I'm okay. Have a list of ideas and need to select just ONE! Whew.

Listening to Cold/Flu webinar again. Great timing for this webinar as ye olde change of seasons sniffles/scratchy throat have appeared, grrr. This weekend will have a number of people involved so it is good to be prepared.

Simon is taking some time out of his cat cave to snooze on a chair. He has tried to convince us to let him out of any door )) Silly cat. Luckily he gives up easily and heads back to the food station for another munch.

Happy just about November!Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-63689570931377569662014-10-30T13:02:00.001-07:002014-10-30T13:02:51.114-07:00The back fence was repaired yesterday and now Tina the turkey is on the fence preening. Simon is on the back of the couch snoozing. Merlin is on her perch by the back window watching the squirrels. Crows and jays are in the back yard 'discussing' peanuts. Wow, everything is almost back to normal. What a roller coaster this month of October has been.

The Giants won the World Series!!!! Herbal care for colds and flu was fabulous. We see Lewis Black tonight. Whoot! Ending the month on a 'who knows what?' lol

Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-36502420503996384472014-10-25T10:25:00.001-07:002014-10-25T10:25:07.995-07:00Simon is still with us. He appears to be better. We have a sacred corner in our home with nice potted plants and candles and such; this is where he has been sleeping. Once he found he could totter around he found this area and it is now his. Merlin, astoundingly, knows this is Simon's special place and hangs out on the 'porch' for kitty chats. Speaking with the holistic vets and other healers we believe he ate a poisoned rodent or bird. With the innate feline knowledge we humans know zippo about he has been healing himself. However, at 20 plus years it could still be his time to cross over at any moment. This entire experience has brought a different energy to our lives. A positive energy. Seriously, the Lord does work in mysterious ways and when He allows glimpses to appear before our material eyes those glimpses are truly awesome.Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-44686573626827010432014-10-14T12:20:00.003-07:002014-10-14T12:20:48.121-07:00Merlin is being very clingy today. She didn't get up till I did this morning which is unusual. She is also on my lap while I'm on the computer. She hasn't been an at desk lap cat for months. Could be because it is the first real day of rain or she senses something else. At any rate she is a little purring comfort, I really need to design an awning for this back window so I can keep the windows open during rain. Proooojeeeect!Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-8441021670645947402014-10-14T11:12:00.001-07:002014-10-14T11:12:43.568-07:00Fire Cider season is here! So glad I have 3 bottles of it ready. The up and down of Simon's health and the up and down of the seasonal weather change has really done a damn-damn on my system. So Mama Kanta's Fire Cider is about to be consumed and another batch started. Yippee! I'm sure my acupuncturist will say there is too much heat in the cider for my constitution, however, there is enough ginger juice that even the late, great Miriam Lee would be okay with the cider. )))

Simon. What can I say? He has moved from R's bathroom to camping out behind some houseplants, coming out for water and, sometimes, a little food. I've placed house training pads all around him as he had an accident that necessitated washing a section of carpet. He can purr strongly again. His eyes are a little more clear and he totters well. The huge swelling has gone down. At this point I have no clue about him. Was he hit by a car? Did he pass a stone of some sort? Did he decide that he could give up one more of his lives? I'm just not sure.Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8687524357333490874.post-37990062895628746692014-10-10T09:31:00.000-07:002014-10-10T09:31:06.532-07:00Praise be! After four days of fasting, drinking only water and only sleeping and peeing Simon is moving around! Not far mind you. He walked to the kitchen and sat next to the food spot. Call me surprised. He slurped up some tuna juice, let Merlin cover him with kitty kisses, let me clean his eyes, growled once, realized I was not going to let him outside and went back to bed, purring.
Sun would break through the rain clouds and puddles would shine. Wind would sing through the trees and cough out a dead branch or two. I decided to try out blogging. Nothing philosophical. Nature, food, cats, etc. No deadline for writing. No comments.Coreahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17039024111153072000noreply@blogger.com0
