Greetings from Mama Kanta's Menagerie!

It's day Whatever of self-isolation/physical distancing and thing are pretty normal up here. Well, except for a few new feline faces. With all the turmoil regarding COVID-19 and people absolutely refusing to accept that THEY MAY CARRY THE VIRUS and treating this healing time as vacation/let's party/screw the world time....people are dumping pets. Yes, folks are so intent on their personal self pleasure that they figure pets are no longer necessary and taking them out of town and dumping them in the woods. Hey, the people don't care the pet companion loves them and has needs; the persons needs are paramount.

The Lt. Gov. of Texas suggests getting the economy back to it's 2018numbers. Money is more important than your grandparents living or the child next door living or the health-compromised gas station attendant living OR the health providers living. Dollars over lives; the great platform of the politically conservative. Evidently also the platform of the pro-life politically 'religious.' /end rant

Back to the menagerie. New feline faces have appeared in the back yard. They look somewhat fearful yet are not attacked by any of the local feral/semi-feral/pick me up, I'm purring here! gang. As it is also feline fornication season this is not necessarily a good thing. I'm going broke with all the cats that appear to the food dish. So I've cut down the amounts of food for the horde. Hopefully some other nice person will step up to the cat dish.

BIRDS! Holy cow! The hummingbirds are many and ferociously frolicking in the air. Dive bombing the cats and fighting beak to beak for the pleasure of the lady birds.  The local over-wintering Anna's hummingbirds are all here with their colorful iridescence and, yesterday, a brilliant Rufus Male dropped in  to stake claim to one of the feeders.

Stellar and Scrub jays are lining the branches of the Rose of Sharon tree (tree, not bush...a little over grown) waiting turns for peanuts. Chickadees are chugging down black sunflower seeds along with birds I don't recognise. FAT Robins are hopping all over the front lawn, so excited the rain has brought food closer to the surface.

Woot! A Rufus just chased a Stellar Jay away from HIS part of the rhodie!

How do cats and birds get along?  Quarterly lectures from Mama Kanta to the cats; Kills the healthy birds and forget the nice dry food and dry beds during the winter. Kill any baby birds and it's cat trap for you, kitto. Has worked for three plus years. A very, very, very few sick birds have appeared on the out skirts of the patios. None have been munched.  The birds, for their part, are extremely brave and smart about the presence of cats and have no problem dive bombing and/or chasing them away from favorite plants.

Enough for now. Must get to cleaning out closet.
